Point Calimere lighthouse is situated about 9 Kms south of Vedaranyam and 7 Kms east of Kodikkarai in Nagapattinam district of Tamilnadu state. The lighthouse was commissioned on 1890 during the British period and renovated on 1902, 1933, 1986 & 1996. The nearest railway station is Nagapattinam around 50 Kms and nearest bus stand is Vedaranyam. A railway line extended up to Vedaranyam is in progress. The light house is situated inside the pointcalimere wild life sanctuary. The pointcalimere wildlife & bird sanctuary is protected area in Tamilnadu, South India along the Palk strait where it meets the Bay of Bengal at pointcalimere southern tip of Nagapattinam district. The forest is abundant with lots of flora & fauna like black buck antelope, Jackal, wild boar, horses, deer and birds like Great Flamingos, painted stork, Spoon bill and seagulls. Old Chola lighthouse which is significant in Kalki’s PONNIYIN SELVAN which was built around 12th century is situated near by pointcalimere lighthouse.
